Electric vehicles made up 47.6% of all new passenger car registrations in the EU through the first 11 months of 2023, a 43% year-over-year increase said the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), an industry body uniting 14 of Europe’s biggest automobile manufacturers.

According to Reuters, new car registrations in the EU increased by 6.7% during November, marking the 16th straight month of growth and a 13.3% year-on-year boost in terms of EVs registered. Petrol car registration increased by 4.2%, while diesel car registration experienced a 10.3% drop.

The number of fully electric cars registered on the continent increased by 16.4% year-over-year to 144,378 units. This boost came despite EV registrations falling by 22.5% in Germany, the EU's biggest electric vehicle market.

Hybrid-electric vehicles continue to dominate the market after 2023 saw a 28.7% year-over-year rise in the number of registrations for this type of automobile. Plug-in hybrid demand fell by 22.1%.

Even though the industry is expanding, the ACEA said earlier this month that the EU's EV sector is at risk of falling behind other regions if the continent doesn't soon implement an industrial vehicle manufacturing strategy.
